Generic Implementation of Lean Concepts in Simulation Models

  1. What are the most important topics of each article?

The article concentrates heavily on lean concepts, applied into a construction setting. Also, the paper focuses on optimizing construction projects by increasing output, reducing waste and also reducing variability in the system. They heavily concentrated on developing a systematic approach for implementing simulation models that are built around the lean production theory. It was also interesting that they applied the concepts towards construction projects, and not in a conventional manufacturing or assembly plant.

  1. What the authors tried to accomplish with the topics presented?

The authors tried to implement the lean production theory into the construction sector. They stated that their main objective was to eliminate waste in the system or activities that are considered non-value added, and they also tried to find ways to reduce process variability, by analyzing the system, they could figure out which variables they could control and which variables were outside of the scope.

The authors also tried to implement a simulation model by using a special purpose simulation template. Base on their description the special purpose template could be used in to basically any simulation model. Their main objective for doing this was to identify and deliver value to the customer by eliminating waste, increase the system output, and reduce variability in the process.

The lean process theory that was presented by the authors was then applied to a real case study of the Anthony Henday Drive Extension. They collected real processing data such as the names of all activities, their duration time with, etc… and applied it to the simulation model. Then in order to validate their model they compared it against the actual outcome of the project for example the looked into the output of different activities and then calculated the difference against the actual process.

Their model showed to perform very well as compared to the real world operations. Then after analyzing the results they were able to identify several activities that were considered non-value added and were able to come up with corrective actions. This allowed them to create more value to the customer, and at the same time they were able to increase they output, by getting rid of the non-value added activities they were also able to reduce the variability in the system.

The concept of this article was very similar to the previous article. The most important concept I have learned is about continuous process improvement. There is always room for improvement, and by implementing lean production theory techniques it can be very effective to reduce the amount of waste that we have in the system. It is also very important to find activities that are non-value added and remove them from the process
