AUCS 340: Ethics in the Professions Values Clarification Exercise Refer to chapter two, pages 16 – 20, in the “Ethics and Basic Law for Medical Imaging Professionals” textbook to complete this assignment. This assignment is divided into two parts. First Part: Answer the 49 questions that are part of the values clarification exercise on pages seventeen – nineteen. You will need to provide a list of your letter answers as the first part of this assignment. Keep a copy of these answers as they will be necessary to complete the second or written evaluation part of this assignment. Most statements cover general information that we need to think about whenever we have to make decisions regarding healthcare matters. I do appreciate that a few questions take the tone that you are considering working in the field of radiology or health care in general but please look at the content of the material and answer all questions to the best of your ability. When you answer each question try to answer on your first instinct rather than thinking of specific gray areas that might be taken into account when answering each statement. We will have the opportunity to discuss certain topics through the medical ethics case studies that will be posted to Blackboard later in the semester. This completes the first part of this assignment. When you submit your answers simply list each number, 1 – 49, and provide the lettered response to each question. Further analysis of your answers will occur in the second part of this assignment. Second Part: Complete the following written responses to the values clarification exercise you have just completed. Some of the responses will require graphic responses or data collection while others will require thoughtful and insightful written responses. Take time to reflect on your answers in each category prior to completing the written portion of this assignment. 1) Provide a general analysis of the categories into which ALL of your responses were listed – agree, disagree or neutral. ( You can group together the A’s and B’s for agree and D’s and E’s for disagree) You must provide a general numerical breakdown of how many agrees, disagrees or neutral you had for the 49 answers in the values clarification exercise. For example: 19 agrees, 3 neutral and 27 disagrees. This information should be presented in a pie chart or bar graph. 2) Now refer to pages 19 and 20 in your textbook to answer this question. Evaluate your responses by the ten categories listed in the text, i.e. death, human sexuality and reproduction, etc. Identify whether your answers for each category contained mostly agree, neutral or disagree. Again, graphic representation of the answers to this question is required. Graphic representation may take the form of bar graphs or pie charts for each category. 3) Indicate your age, gender and number of siblings in paragraph formation. Regarding siblings, where are you located in the family structure? 4) What is your major? Do you have a minor, if so name it? How do you plan to use your major (and minor) in your career? 5) Why did you enroll in a course regarding professional ethical behavior as part of your educational plan? Be specific here and offer an example related to your professional goals. 6) Overall evaluation of answers – Review the ten categories of answers and find at least one category where your answers were mostly agree or disagree. Now review the content of these questions and provide a written summary of why you think you agreed or disagreed with a majority of these answers: for example, was it due to personal experience(s), work, and/or reading of the question? 7) Overall evaluation of answers – Review the ten categories of answers and find at least one category where your answers were very different, possibly agree, neutral and disagree all in one category. Again, review the content of these questions and provide a written summary of why you think your answers were so divergent in this/these categories. 8) Did you have any category in which your responses were all neutral? Why is that? (If such a category did not exist for you may proceed directly to the question number nine.) 9) What did you learn about yourself and your ability to apply ethical reasoning from completing this medically based values clarification exercise? This assignment is due Saturday March 28th by noon. Grading: This assignment is divided into two parts: part one – list the individual answers to questions 1 – 49. Part two is more complex and includes graphic and written responses to multiple questions. A. 20% for answers to the 49 statements B. 40% for quality and thoroughness of responses, C. 20% for sentence structure, spelling and grammar, D. 20% for graphic demonstration of overall and individual responses to statements The written answers should be completed in 12 font, double spaced format. You should incorporate color into your graphic responses. It is expected that the written summary for questions three through nine in the second portion of this assignment will result in two – three pages of written text. Please note that this assignment is worth 20% of the total grading for this course.
